1,752 FLAGS PLACED TO REPRESENT LGBTQ SUICIDES OIA Newswire
WHAT: The University of Missouri organization Allies in Action will place 1,752 flags on Carnahan Quad to represent the number of suicides that occur each year among members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community. During a flag removal ceremony, participants will be asked to remove a flag from the ground and write on the back of the flag what they are going to do to help foster change.
WHO: The day's events are sponsored by Allies in Action, a group dedicated to providing LGBTQ allies with a more conducive and inclusive environment for students. Events are free and open to the public.
WHEN: Thursday, Oct. 16th 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. – flags on display 6 p.m. – flag removal ceremony
WHERE:Carnahan Quad, MU Campus
WHY: Every five hours a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer person will commit suicide, and 20 more will attempt suicide due to homophobia, biphobia and transphobia.
